DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment (Sierra Institute) has created several beneficial opportunities for Plumas County as a non-profit organization since the late 90’s to help communities manage local forests and create forest-related programs throughout the Sierra. The Sierra Institute efforts include supporting healthy forests and watersheds, building vibrant communities, and developing young stewards through educational and sustainability programs. They recognize the direct relationship rural communities have with forest landscapes and advance integrative programs that support rural environmental, economic, and community health at local, regional, and national levels for the past thirty years. The mission of the Sierra Institute is to promote healthy and sustainable forests and watersheds by investing in the well-being of diverse rural communities and strengthening their participation in natural resource decision-making and programs.
