Background
In 1963, President John Kennedy designated the month of May as “Senior Citizens Month.” In 1980, President Jimmy Carter renamed it “Older Americans Month.” It has become a proud tradition that shows our nation’s commitment to honor the value that elders continue to contribute to our communities. This year’s theme is “Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow.” and emphasizes the important role of older adults in our society. A local celebration sponsored by the El Dorado County Area Agency on Aging and Commission on Aging will be held on May 21, 2014 at each Senior Nutrition meal site.

Each year, in honor of Older Americans Month, members of the public are invited to nominate a senior they believe has made a significant contribution to the local community to be considered for designation as County of El Dorado Senior of the Year. A panel of Commission on Aging members reviews the nominations and awards this prestigious title to the nominee they decide, based on information presented in the nomination, which best demonstrates selfless dedication to serving their fellow County residents and the community at large.
