Fiscal Impact/Change to Net County Cost:  Forty dollars ($40.00) from the General Fund will replenish the loss in the Inmate Welfare Fund.

Background: Pursuant to Government Code Section 29390, the County historically has required departments to present to the Board a request for relief of accountability for cash shortage issues.

Reason for Recommendation:  On May 8th and again on May 15th, Sheriff's staff in the South Lake Tahoe Jail unknowingly accepted counterfeit $20.00 bills from inmates being booked into the jail. Staff at Bank of America subsequently confirmed that the bills were counterfeit.  A report was filed with the City of South Lake Tahoe Police Department for further investigation.  Jail staff was unable to determine which of the inmates were responsible for the counterfeit bills.  Procedures for identifying a counterfeit bill have been reviewed with jail staff to prevent a future occurrence.

Action to be taken following Board approval:  The Sheriff will submit a claim to the Auditor for a $40.00 replenishment of the Inmate Welfare Fund.
