DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION:
Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) recommending the Board receive a presentation by the Commission on Aging (COA) that outlines the purpose of the COA and summarizes the COA’s 2017 accomplishments.
DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
The COA is an advisory Committee to the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors and to the Area Agency on Aging. In accordance with Title III of the Older Americans Act, the COA focuses on the issues and the interests of seniors in El Dorado County. They also promote services to help seniors to remain in their homes and to prevent elder abuse.
The COA is comprised of five (5) members appointed from each Board District and one (1) member-at-large; one (1) member from each incorporated city in the county; and six (6) members appointed by the Commission. Meetings are held monthly, except during the months of July and December, at various locations throughout the County.
Annually, the COA reports to the Board regarding the activities and accomplishments of the COA over the prior year. Some highlights from 2017 include the development of a standardized monitoring process to review AAA programs, a Second Annual COA Retreat to set priorities for the upcoming year, and a booth at the El Dorado County Fair focusing on the COA and senior programs. The COA received presentations on topics including, but not limited to, hospice services, analytics specific to El Dorado County, and Alzheimer’s programs and services. The COA also worked diligently to educate themselves and County staff about the requirements and benefits of the Senior Legal Services Program and advocate on behalf of seniors to keep this critical program intact.
