DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION:
Health and Human Services Agency recommending the Board approve and authorize the Chair to sign a Proclamation recognizing August 2018 as “Breastfeeding Awareness Month” in the County of El Dorado to increase public awareness of the health benefits and the importance of supporting mothers who want to breastfeed.
DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
The month of August has historically been named “Breastfeeding Awareness Month” both nationally and in the State of California. The County of El Dorado Board of Supervisors has approved a Proclamation naming August as “Breastfeeding Awareness Month” beginning in August 2017.
All citizens, governmental agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, and hospitals in El Dorado County are encouraged to join online actions and conversations to build support for the policy and practice changes needed to build a “landscape of breastfeeding support.”
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could decline to approve the Proclamation naming August as “Breastfeeding Awareness Month.”
