DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
President Gerald Ford declared November 3, 1974 through November 10, 1974 as the first “National Emergency Medical Services Week.” This annual observance continued for four more years. It was re-instituted by The American College of Emergency Physicians in 1982, which moved the observance of EMS Week from November to September. In 1992, the observance of EMS Week was moved to the third week in May.

National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line." This year, the annual EMS Week will be celebrated throughout the Nation beginning May 19, 2019 through May 25, 2019 under the theme “EMS STRONG: Beyond the Call.”

In conjunction with this proclamation, the El Dorado County Emergency Services Authority (West Slope JPA) and the California Tahoe Emergency Services Operations Authority (CalTahoe JPA) will give presentations to the Board regarding their emergency personnel’s outstanding contributions and dedication to their respective organizations.

ALTERNATIVES:
The Board of Supervisors could decline to adopt this Proclamation to recognize May 19, 2019 through May 25, 2019 as EMS Week.
