Body
DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
The National Animal Care & Control Association began presenting national awards in 1988 at their annual training conference. This recognition is of the men and women who dedicate their lives to preserving the human/animal bond by insisting upon responsible pet ownership.

The County’s Animal Services Officers are available twenty-four (24) hours each day, seven (7) days each week, every day of the year. Animal Services support staff care for all of the animals located at each of the two County animal shelters every day, regardless of weather conditions. Animal Care and Control personnel provide the essential community functions of enforcing Animal Control laws, protecting the County residents and visitors from diseases such as rabies, and educating the public on the proper care of the community’s pets and livestock.

Each Animal Services Officer must pass and maintain the necessary law enforcement training to effectively perform their duties in the field. They are often called upon to accompany local law enforcement to remove and care for animals when local law enforcement needs Animal Services’ assistance. Their service extends to disasters, emergencies, and various rescues. In addition, Animal Services Officers provide mutual aid assistance to other counties, when requested, in response to a disaster or emergency in the requesting county.

ALTERNATIVES:
The Board of Supervisors could decline to adopt this Proclamation to recognize April 12, 2020 through April 18, 2020 as National Animal Care and Control Week.
