Title

Sheriff's Office recommending the Board direct the Auditor-Controller to allow employees to make voluntary deductions from their paychecks to provide donations to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 457 and/or the Sheriff's Posse.

Body

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is supported by multiple non-profit volunteer groups, including Explorer Post 457 and the Sheriff’s Posse program, both of which are vital to fostering public safety, youth development, and community engagement. Explorer Post 457 provides young adults with firsthand experiences in law enforcement, preparing them for potential careers in public safety while also building leadership skills and civic responsibility. Similarly, the Sheriff’s Posse program enhances resources available to staff members, public event support, and various community engagement activities.  The Sheriff's Office has historically worked very closely with these groups and has benefited significantly from their support and participation.

To support these programs that provide valuable support to the public service mission of the Sheriff's Office, the Sheriff’s Office is requesting that the Board direct the Auditor-Controller to take the necessary steps to allow employees to voluntarily contribute to these organizations through payroll deductions. This approach ensures transparency, fiscal responsibility, and an opportunity for County employees to directly support initiatives that align with the mission of public service and community safety.

ALTERNATIVES

The Board could decline to direct the Auditor-Controller to implement these voluntary deductions. If so, employees would be unable to make payroll-deducted donations to these programs and would need to contribute directly outside of the payroll system.

CAO RECOMMENDATION / COMMENTS

Approve as recommended.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

There is no financial impact to the County as the donations are voluntary and would be deducted from employees’ paychecks. Administrative costs, if any, for establishing and maintaining the deductions would be minimal and absorbed within existing resources.
