DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) is an international body of practitioners which provides training and research in the area of community corrections.  Each year, APPA coordinates the recognition of over 100,000 community corrections professionals in the United States and Canada. The recognition is designed to honor their work and highlight the success and importance of community corrections and bring greater understanding to the methods employed by these professionals to improve public safety through life changing interventions delivered to persons involved in the criminal justice system. APPA has identified July 16 through 22, 2023, as Pretrial, Probation, and Parole Supervision Week in North America. This occasion will be formally recognized by the Governor of California and proposed to be recognized by each of the fifty-eight counties in California.

The Mission of the El Dorado County Probation Department is “Providing Public Safety through Collaborative Partnerships and Innovative Practices in Corrections, with Accountability and Compassion.” In the delivery of this mission, the Probation staff demonstrate that they are dedicated public servants who identify with a distinctive, century old, professional tradition focused on the reduction of recidivism through the promotion of pro-social, healthy behaviors and choices of individuals involved in the juvenile and criminal justice systems.

Probation professionals are highly trained to operate in accordance with a refined practice and with a specific skill set reflecting a synthetic approach to promoting human behavior change while engaged in active public protection as peace officers in the community. Their training and experience culminate in the delivery of a unique linchpin service designed to provide public protection and enhance the lives of individuals, families, and the community.

For this reason, the Probation Department requests the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors acknowledge by proclamation the week of July 16 through 22, 2023, as Probation Services Week.
