Sheriff's Office recommending the Board consider the following:
1) Accept the grant award for the Stop Tobacco Access to Kids Enforcement (STAKE) Grant Program in the amount of $67,975.60; and
2) Adopt and authorize the Chair to sign the Tobacco Law Enforcement Grant Program required Governing Body Resolution 145-2020 for the purpose of authorizing the applicant to enter into a contract with the state and identifying the Sheriff as the authorized person to execute future amendments to the contract.

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
The STAKE Act specifically targets the youth and young adults, considering this age group is widely marketed to by major tobacco companies. There have been studies shown that over the age of 18, people are less likely to pick up the habit. However, tobacco companies have conducted their own studies to particularly target the youth to develop products and campaigns aimed at teens.
The California Department of Public Health has awarded the Sheriff’s Office approximately $67,976 to combat tobacco use by the local youth. The Sheriff’s Office plans to utilize these funds over the next three fiscal years in the following ways:
1) Strengthen relationships between School Resource Officer’s and teenagers to help educate the latter in the negative impacts of tobacco use;
2) Enforce/ensure compliance with all tobacco laws;
3) Educate parents, school administration, and students about the dangers and signs of tobacco use, the types of tobacco products currently available and preventative measures; and
4) Collaborate with other County departments and private agencies to gather data on the consumption of tobacco and related products by minors.
The Sheriff’s Office is an advocate for a healthy future in El Dorado County and values the role played in education of future generations.
