DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

The Sheriff’s Office received Board approval to purchase a Helicopter for Aviation patrol duties. As a result, the Sheriff’s Office expressed a need for a Deputy Sheriff II to perform pilot duties when necessary to function as a Helicopter Pilot. At the request of the Sheriff’s Office, Human Resources analyzed the minimum qualifications of the Deputy Sheriff I-II to identify additional duties, knowledge, abilities and required certifications to the Deputy Sheriff II classification when assigned as a Helicopter Pilot.

As a result of the analysis, in collaboration with the Sheriff’s Office, Human Resources recommends a revision to the minimum qualifications for the Deputy Sheriff I-II classification. Human Resources and the Sheriff’s Office are also recommending updates to the Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Undersheriff classifications to address the new Senate Bill 2 (SB 2) titled “Peace officers: certification: civil rights. (2021-2022)," which outlines the peace officer certification requirement changes in California. In addition, there were edits to the existing classification specification in order to format it to Human Resources’ current standards.
