DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

The Sheriff's Office currently has a substation located at 6101 Front Street in Georgetown, however, that lease will be expiring April 1, 2025, and the landlord has indicated the rent is expected to increase to $450 per month versus the current rate of $1 per year.  This led the Sheriff's Office to explore other options for a similar price range.  It was discovered that the location of 6323 Highway 193 was available for the same $450 per month.  This space is larger and more centrally located in Georgetown providing more access to citizens and allied agencies in the event of a disaster.

In recent years, the Georgetown substation has been used for Office of Emergency Services (OES) staff as a briefing point for disasters. During these events it was identified that a larger space with greater access would be ideal; this information was used when determining a location for the new Georgetown substation.

EDSO has had a presence in Georgetown since 2004 and since that time has strengthened community relations.  The substation provides staff with a professional place to conduct interviews, meet citizens to discuss community issues, and allow citizens to make direct contact with the Sheriff's Office without the need for traveling into Placerville.  This provides greater visibility for the Sheriff's Office in Georgetown and makes resources readily available for deputies assigned to the area. The Sheriff's Office is committed to working with the Georgetown community to reduce crime and related problems in the area.

The lease is for an initial term of 10 years, with the option of two five-year extensions.

ALTERNATIVES

The Board could decline the request to use the Georgetown substation which, would affect the Sheriff’s operations for that area of the County.
