DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
The Sheriff’s Office applied and was awarded the CTFGP funding in the amount of $154,721. Final approval and award are contingent upon receiving documentation from the local governing body, the County Board of Supervisors, authorizing the Sheriff’s Office to receive the grant funding.
The goal in submitting the grant application was to receive funding for a program that would allow the Sheriff’s Office to reduce and mitigate the impacts of impaired driving in the community. This grant provides financial assistance to allied agencies for the education, prevention, and the enforcement of laws related to driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs, including cannabis and cannabis products. The intent of the program is to educate the public regarding the dangers of impaired driving, enforce impaired driving laws on the roadway, and improve the organization/agency’s effectiveness through training and development of new strategies. Having this knowledge and training will increase the overall safety of the community.
The Sheriff’s Office will use this funding to perform regular DUI enforcement patrol. This will consist of 4 deputies who work 10 hour shifts 3 times a month on weekend evenings in the areas where we get the most reports of DUI’s. These deputies would operate in 1 person units and actively respond to reported DUI’s from Central Dispatch as well as actively looking for unreported DUI drivers. The deputies would be in fully marked cars and in full uniform and equipped with either a Preliminary Alcohol Screening or Evidential Portable Alcohol System devices as well as the other documents and guides to conduct a full DUI investigation from start to finish. The grant will also cover the cost of one dispatcher on overtime to cover only the saturation patrols due to the added call
volume, radio traffic, and information needed to be relayed.
The Sheriff's Office was also awarded this grant in FY 2023-24 and successfully met the measures set forth by CHP, which led to the increase of grant funds for FY 2024-25. The Sheriff’s Office will include the appropriations and revenues related to this grant in the adopted budget.
