Reason For Recommendation
At its June 10, 2014, meeting (Item 69), the Board of Supervisors heard a presentation from Laurence Crabtree, Forest Supervisor, Eldorado National Forest, on the California Historic Landmark dedication and celebration for the site at Echo Summit that served as the high-altitude training center of the U.S. Olympic Men's Track and Field Trials.  The Board authorized a contribution in the amount of $5,000 to support the dedication and celebration activities scheduled for the site and also authorized the Eldorado National Forest to use the County seal on literature and documents developed to promote the dedication and celebration activities.
In 1968, Echo Summit served as the high-altitude training center of the U.S. Olympic Men's track and Field Trials.  The U.S. team selected for the Olympic Games in Mexico City was celebrated worldwide for its athletic dominance and deep commitment to racial justice.  The celebration of this unique place marks its significance in history.  The Site of Echo Summit is California Historic Landmark No. 1048.
The attached Funding Agreement #665-F1411 authorizes the Purchasing Agent to advance to Eldorado National Forest the sum of $5,000 to support the dedication and celebration activities that were held at the site on June 27, 2014.
