DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

On February 10, 2004, the Board of Supervisors, in coordination with the University of California Cooperative Extension, created the El Dorado County Youth Commission. Oversight of the Commission transferred to the El Dorado County Office of Education in 2011 as the objectives of the Commission aligned more closely with the programs within the Office of Education’s purview.

The purpose of the Youth Commission is to collect all information relevant to advising the Board of Supervisors on the effects of legislative policies, needs, assessments, priorities, programs, and budgets concerning the children and youth of El Dorado County.

Some of the duties of the Commission include identifying the concerns and needs of the children and youth of El Dorado County; examining existing social, economic, educational, and recreational programs for children and youth; developing and proposing plans that support or improve such programs; and make recommendations to the Board of Supervisors through their Board Liaison or their appointing Board member. Another function of the Commission is to identify the unmet needs of El Dorado County’s children and youth through personal contact with these young people, school officials, church leaders, and others; and hold public forums in which both youth and adults are encouraged to participate.

The Commission provides an annual Report to the Board of Supervisors by June each year which includes the Commission’s activities, goals and accomplishments of the past year to the Board of Supervisors. The purpose of this board item is to seat the 2023/24 Youth Commission.

ALTERNATIVES

The Board could choose not to appoint this year’s Commissioners, which would affect the Youth Commission’s ability to serve the youth of El Dorado County.
