Body

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently conducted an Engineering and Traffic Survey (E&TS) on State Route 50 (Highway 50) from the Kyburz Maintenance Station to 0.2 miles east of 33 Mile Stone within El Dorado County.

The following are the proposed changes:

- Mile marker 48.65 to mile marker 48.87 is currently a 45-mile-per hour (MPH) speed zone that traverses residential and open areas. Based on the survey conducted, it is proposed to revert back to the maximum speed limit of 55 mph.

- Mile marker 48.87 to mile marker 49.20 is currently a 45 MPH speed zone that traverses residential and open areas. Based on the survey conducted, it is proposed to revert back to the maximum speed limit of 55 mph.

- Mile marker 49.20 to mile marker 49.44 is currently a 45 MPH speed zone that traverses residential and open areas. Based on information gathered, it is proposed to revert back to the maximum speed limit of 55 mph.

Periodically, E&TS's are necessary to ensure speed zones remain enforceable. As required by Section 22354.5(b) of the California Vehicle Code, El Dorado County was notified of the proposed changes and has chosen to conduct a public meeting on the results of the draft E&TS and intends to forward any comments received to Caltrans prior to the May 7, 2026, deadline.
