Body

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

The Human Resources Department, in collaboration with Parks, a division of the Chief Administrative Office, is requesting approval for updates to the class specifications for the Park Operations Assistant and River Instructor roles. The goal is to maintain the core competencies needed to perform the work while making these positions more accessible to a broader applicant pool. Specifically, the revisions open the qualifications to include high school students who are currently enrolled, making it easier for them to apply for the Park Operations Assistant position. For the River Instructor, we have adjusted the Minimum Qualifications to allow a broader range of experience or possession of certain certificates related to the work to qualify.

These changes are particularly important as the last few seasons have been challenging to fully staff, and expanding the applicant pool is expected to help mitigate these staffing difficulties. By removing barriers, we aim to maintain the standards necessary for successful job performance while also supporting our ongoing commitment to attracting qualified candidates from various backgrounds and experience levels.

ALTERNATIVES

The Board could choose not to approve the revised class specifications, which would keep the current, more restrictive qualification requirements in place, thereby limiting the potential applicant pool.
