Body
Fiscal Impact/Change to Net County Cost: None.
Reason for Recommendation:
Annually the Federal Government declares the month of May as "Older Americans Month", and the State proclaims May as "Older Californians Month". The 2011 theme is "Older Americans: Connecting the Community". The attached Proclamation designates May, 2011 as Older Americans Month in El Dorado County to pay tribute to the rapidly increasing older population in local communities and throughout the world, commends older Americans for their role in society, encourages the enrichment of quality of life for older Americans and further encourages all citizens to celebrate our nation's older adults and the professionals, family members and volunteers who care for them. A local celebration sponsored by the El Dorado County Area Agency on Aging and Commission on Aging was held on May 18, 2011 at each Senior Nutrition mealsite.
Every year, members of the public are invited to nominate a senior they believe has made a significant contribution to the local community to be considered for designation as Senior of the Year. A panel of Commission on Aging members reviews the nominations and awards this prestigious title to the nominee they believe, based on information presented in the nomination, best demonstrates selfless dedication to serving their fellow County residents and the community at large. A perpetual Senior of the Year trophy is traditionally presented annually to the senior selected to receive this honor, and the deserving nominees each receive a certificate in recognition of their contributions to the community.
Action to be taken following Board approval:
Board Clerk to obtain Chairman's signature on two original Older Americans Month proclamations and provide one original proclamation to Human Services at Briw Road.
