DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION:
The Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) recommending the Board authorize the Chair to sign a proclamation to recognize April 2 - 8, 2018 as National Public Health Week, acknowledging public health professionals and others who work to improve the long-term health and welfare of our residents. HHSA also encourages the citizens of El Dorado County to access the County’s Public Health Division’s “Well Dorado” website to learn how to become healthier and strive to fulfill National Public Health Week’s theme of making the United States the “Healthiest Nation 2030.”
DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
President Bill Clinton issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the first full week in April 1995 as National Public Health Week. In his proclamation, he extolled the value of public health, saying that, “safe living and working environments, developing methods to immunize populations against infectious disease, maintaining good nutritional standards, and having good prenatal care for everyone are vital endeavors.”
More recently, in 2015, President Barack Obama called upon “...all citizens, government agencies, private businesses, nonprofit organizations and other groups to join in activities and take action to improve the health of our nation.” He reaffirmed the goal of a healthy nation in a 2016 proclamation in which he spoke to former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative which encouraged physical activity and nutritious food choices for our Nation’s youth while engaging parents and kids in the work of building stronger, healthier communities.
The Public Health Division’s Well Dorado website (http://www.welldorado.org/) brings a wealth of information to one accessible, user-friendly location. There, El Dorado County citizens can learn ways to improve their own and others’ lives by making healthy lifestyle choices. They can learn about the status of our community’s health and what activities are being done to improve it, and can access resources like a healthy-eating recipe blog and a community events calendar.
