DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION
Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) recommending the Board receive a presentation by the Commission on Aging (COA) that outlines the purpose of the COA and summarizes the COA’s 2016 accomplishments.
DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
The COA is an advisory Committee to the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors and to the Area Agency on Aging. In accordance with Title III of the Older Americans Act, the COA focuses on the issues and the interests of seniors in El Dorado County. They also promote services to help seniors to remain in their homes and to prevent elder abuse.
The COA is comprised of five (5) members appointed from each Board District and one (1) member-at-large; one (1) member from each incorporated city in the county; and six (6) members appointed by the Commission. Meetings are held monthly, except during the months of July and December, at various locations throughout the County.
Annually, the COA reports to the Board regarding the activities and accomplishments of the COA over the prior year. Some highlights from 2016 include the development of a Planning Committee, an Education Committee, and an Outreach and Promotion Committee. The COA also received presentations on topics including, but not limited to, a discussion of California Public Utilities Commission programs and scams targeted at seniors, the role of an Ombudsman, fighting Medicare fraud, and activities available at the Adult Day Center. The COA also participated in Older Americans Day celebrations.
