Library recommending the Board consider the following:
1) Acceptance of funding totaling $14,938 from NorthNet Library system for the purchase of iPads and accessories, including applications (apps) and ebooks to loan to library patrons to advance their digital literacy skills;
2) Authorize the Chair to sign a budget transfer increasing revenues and appropriations by $14,938 as a result of the acceptance of this funding; and

Background
The El Dorado County Library is a member of NorthNet Library System, a consortium of Northern California Libraries.
Recently, the County Library became aware of an Innovation Grant Opportunity from the NorthNet Library System that encourages libraries to introduce a new idea, program or vision that is not currently in use at the library. The grant application was due on January 9, 2013, and due to the short turnaround time, the Library submitted an application for funding. The grant application did not bind or obligate the County to any action, and there are no match requirements associated with this funding.
Reason for Recommendation
The South Lake Tahoe Library plans to purchase a collection of ten iPads to circulate among library users. The iPads will include apps and content that address the interests of all ages and demographic groups. The project will be modeled after similar tablet circulating programs at the Darien Public Library (Connecticut) and Arlington Heights Memorial Library (Illinois), as well as the Nook circulating program at the Sacramento Public Library.
Upon receipt of the iPads, the Library will work with County IT to ensure appropriate location and data wipe software is available in the event the iPads are lost or stolen.
