DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION:
Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), recommending the Board approve and authorize the Chair to sign a Proclamation recognizing November 2017 as “Diabetes Awareness Month” in El Dorado County.
DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
The percentage of the U.S. Population with diagnosed Diabetes has risen steadily from 0.93% in 1958 to the current rate of 7.2%. Drawing individuals’ attention to the disease can help with prevention and/or management of the disease. The month of November has been named “National Diabetes Month" twenty four (24) times since 1982, with national attention also being drawn to the disease through proclamations for recognition of related issues such as Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, American Heart Month, National Walking Month, and Save Your Vision Week. This will be the first year the County of El Dorado Board of Supervisors has approved a Proclamation naming November as “Diabetes Awareness Month.”
Recent data shows 5% to 7% of adults residing in El Dorado County have diagnosed diabetes, and another 1.5% do not know they have the disease. All citizens, governmental agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, hospitals and schools should encourage El Dorado County residents to know their risk factors for diabetes by talking with their doctors or taking an online Type 2 Diabetes risk test.
ALTERNATIVES:
