Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) recommending the Board receive a presentation from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) El Dorado County, recognizing El Dorado County Sheriff Office Sergeant Troy Morton, who has demonstrated dedication to improving interactions between Law Enforcement and community members with a mental illness, through the application of Crisis Intervention Training Techniques.
DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
The Crisis Intervention Training program is a model for community policing that is directed at improving law enforcement responses to people in crisis. Crisis Intervention Training gives officers more tools to do their job safely and effectively.
The Crisis Intervention awards started in 2009 as a partnership between NAMI El Dorado County, the Mental Health Commission, and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. The awards were initiated to encourage and showcase the need for and effectiveness of Crisis Intervention Training for Law Enforcement. Crisis Intervention Training improves interactions between Law Enforcement and community members with a mental illness. Each year, NAMI El Dorado County presents the award to one or more Sheriff Deputies and /or Police Officers who have demonstrated their dedication to using Crisis Intervention skills while working with community members who have mental illness.
The 2017 recipient is El Dorado County Sheriff Office Sergeant Troy Morton.
