DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
On April 14, 2026 (Legistar 26-0670), the Parks and Recreation Commission (PRC) discussed ideas for recognizing parks and trails volunteers. The PRC expressed interested in recognizing volunteers through social media spotlight posts, on the Parks Division website, in a Mt Democrat article, during the PRC’s annual report presentation to the Board, and some interest in a volunteer appreciation event.
On June 11, 2026 (Legistar 26-0944), the PRC approved the Volunteer Recognition plan and timeline and discussed the preliminary list of volunteers for nominations by district prepared by Parks Division staff. The PRC requested staff provide a write-up description of the volunteers’ achievements for their review. The PRC will select one nomination per district to recognize and honor in 2026. The recognized volunteers will be highlighted in the PRC’s annual presentation to the Board of Supervisors in September. Volunteer recognition activities will resume in April 2027 to celebrate National Volunteer Month.
Recognizing volunteers is part of the PRC’s 2025-26 Annual Goal to “support staff with recruiting volunteer base, providing motivational support, and recognizing volunteer achievements”, in alignment with Parks and Trails Master Plan Initiative 4.1.4. to “provide motivational support for and retention of volunteers through calls to service and recognition of efforts”.
