DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
Social Work Month in March is a time to celebrate the great profession of social work. National Social Work Month was first organized in March of 1963 by the National Association of Social Workers as a way to encourage public support for the profession.

In 1984, the White House first recognized March as the month to celebrate these everyday heroes that live among us. Every March, we celebrate National Social Work Month to highlight the outstanding contributions that social workers make to individuals, families and communities.

This year’s theme is “The Time is Right for Social Work,” which is an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the many positive contributions of the profession. There are more than 700,000 professional social workers employed in the United States, and more than three million worldwide. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics continues to identify social work as one of the fastest growing professions in the United States. Other government sources report there are more clinically trained social workers providing mental health and behavioral health services than any other professional discipline in the nation. However, the nation needs more social workers as it continues to deal with entrenched problems that have stressed our society, including the coronavirus pandemic. This is an opportunity to recognize our social workers, those who help our friends, family, and neighbors navigate tough life challenges so that they can accomplish their life goals.
