Background: The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has operated an Air Squadron for more than twenty years which consists of non-County owned fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft that are flown by volunteers. The Air Squadron provides services to the Sheriff’s Office for search and rescue, transporting employees and prisoners, as well as orientation flights for employees. In August 2011, the Sheriff’s Office secured a helicopter to provide services similar to the services flown by the volunteers. After the Sheriff’s Office announced they had a volunteer with a helicopter, the Risk Management Division determined that the County has no insurance coverage for the Air Squadron services provided by the volunteers who are operating aircraft on behalf of the County. The Sheriff’s Office and Risk Management Division have worked together to obtain insurance coverage that covers the County, the Sheriff’s Office and the Air Squadron.
The Risk Management Division worked with the County's local insurance broker, Don Erickson at Atwood Insurance Services, to secure the additional coverage for non-owned aircraft for the Air Squadron operations by adding it to the County's current airport liability policy at no additional cost to the County. The policy will provide $10,000,000 per occurrence for non-owned aircraft at the airport and for Air Squadron operations at $10,000,000 per occurrence. The Risk Management Div...
