DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
President Bill Clinton issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the first full week in April 1995 as National Public Health Week. In his proclamation, he extolled the value of public health, saying that, “safe living and working environments, developing methods to immunize populations against infectious disease, maintaining good nutritional standards, and having good prenatal care for everyone are vital endeavors.”
More recently, in 2015, President Barack Obama called upon “...all citizens, government agencies, private businesses, nonprofit organizations and other groups to join in activities and take action to improve the health of our nation.” He reaffirmed the goal of a healthy nation in a 2016 proclamation in which he spoke to former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative which encouraged physical activity and nutritious food choices for our Nation’s youth while engaging parents and kids in the work of building stronger, healthier communities.
