DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing year-round training and activities to 5 million participants and Unified Sports partners in 172 countries. Special Olympics competitions are held daily, all around the world - including local, national, and regional competitions, adding up to more than 100,000 events a year.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is a global initiative that engages law enforcement officers to support individuals with intellectual disabilities through the Special Olympics. Founded in 1981 by Wichita Police Chief Richard LaMunyon, the LETR aims to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics movement. Officers participate in torch relays, carrying the "Flame of Hope" to various events, including the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics. The LETR is recognized as the largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics worldwide.
