DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office seeks to establish a new classification, Sheriff’s Emergency Call Taker, to enhance operational efficiency within the Sheriff’s Public Safety Dispatcher series. Introducing a dedicated call-taking level will allow the Sheriff’s Office to more clearly distinguish duties between emergency call intake and radio dispatch functions, supporting improved workflow and service delivery in the Communications Center.

Additionally, Human Resources conducted a classification review and determined that updates to the Sheriff’s Public Safety Dispatcher I/II and Sheriff’s Public Safety Dispatcher Supervisor class specifications are necessary. These updates modernize the series, align terminology and duty statements with current operational practices, and formally incorporate the new Sheriff’s Emergency Call Taker role into the existing classification structure. Establishing an entry-level call-taking classification clarifies career progression within the series and supports workforce planning, recruiting pathways, and structured training progression.
