DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a machine-based system that uses machine and human-based inputs to perceive real and virtual environments to perform tasks such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and natural language processing to process information and provide responses that users can use for a variety of applications, including reporting, problem solving, and decision making.
The purpose of the Artificial Intelligence Policy is to establish a governance structure for the responsible use of AI systems and technologies and to establish and maintain processes to assess and manage risks when using AI systems on the County network. The policy applies to all El Dorado County computer users, approved external users, and all authorized devices connected to the primary El Dorado County information domain.
Draft Policy A-23 has been distributed to all impacted County Departments for input and has been approved by County Counsel. This policy follows industry-wide Information Technologies (IT) best practices.

There is no direct financial impact to establishing this policy. Indirectly, the proposed policy should assist in minimizing the County’s liability.
