DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
Department is requesting the Board receive and file the El Dorado-Alpine Counties 2017 Agricultural Crop and Livestock Report. Commissioner Carveth addressed that the gross crop value for the County of El Dorado was $70,806,157, representing an increase of 14.5% from 2016 values. Apples and apple products continued to be the leading crop in El Dorado County with a total value of $ 22,330,320 million. Livestock remained the second leading crop worth a value of $10,998,959 million. Wine grape values increased by 2% over the 2016 values to $8.9 million. Timber values nearly doubled in 2017 to $10,047,556, directly attributed to increased timber values per million board feet.
Monetary values in this report are F.O.B. (Freight On Board) and do not reflect net returns or profits realized by the growers. It is estimated that the impact of agriculture to the County of El Dorado’s economy totaled over $600 million in 2017, of which, Apple Hill and value-added products contributed an estimated $263 million while the wine industry added another $302 million.
Alpine County’s gross crop value for 2017 was estimated to be $5.4 million. This was a decline of 2.3% from the 2016 values. Price per hundredweight for cattle was the main decrease from the previous year.

An annual crop report is in accordance with Sections 2271 and 2279 of the California's Food and Agricultural Code for the purpose of publishing an accurate and meaningful report of the agricultural conditions in El Dorado and Alpine Counties. Lending/financial institutions, news outlets, statistical services, education centers, realty agencies, and prospective agricultural land purchasers are extremely interested in the annual crop report.
