Body

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

In accordance with the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, the Department of Human Resources is recommending the Board adopt a county-wide Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Policy. The purpose of this policy is to comply with the law and foster a safe and productive work environment; offer resources to those who need it; and send a clear message that substance use in the workplace is incompatible with County employment. The recommended policy as proposed aligns with the County’s current practice and process relating to maintaining a drug and alcohol-free workplace.

ALTERNATIVES

A drug and alcohol-free workplace policy is required under the law. The Board may choose not to approve the proposed Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Policy and direct Human Resources to make revisions and bring a revised policy back to the Board.
