DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
The El Dorado County Transportation Commission (EDCTC) is submitting a grant for the SB 1 Solutions for Congested Corridors Program to help fund the U.S. Highway 50 Safety Improvements Project (Project) in the Camino Corridor. The Camino Corridor suffers from collision rates that are higher than the state average resulting in numerous fatalities. Uncontrolled left turn movements at intersections and driveways, as well as cross-centerline collisions further contribute to potential conflicts. High volumes of regional agritourism traffic and even higher volumes of interregional recreational tourism traffic to the Tahoe Basin contribute to significant congestion on U.S. Highway 50 through the Project area. The proposed Project will eliminate or reduce potential conflicts and fatalities by installing safety features selected with input from the community, local businesses, and partners and will reduce congestion and improve throughput by remedying access issues along the Camino Corridor.
ALTERNATIVES
The Board could choose not to authorize the Chair to sign the letter of support which could lessen the chances of being awarded the grant monies.
