DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND
The Presiding Judge of the Superior Court of California, County of El Dorado, is the appointing authority for the Chief Probation Officer. The Presiding Judge has accepted the current CPO’s separation effective October 17, 2025, and will appoint Deputy Chief Probation Officer Kaci Smith as Interim Chief Probation Officer effective October 18, 2025. This appointment is being made in collaboration with the County. Both the Court and the County have reviewed Ms. Smith's qualifications and are collectively supportive of this appointment to support uninterrupted operations during the interim period.

The Board’s action recognizes, and is agreement with, the Court’s appointment for County employment purposes, approves interim compensation at Step 1 of the CPO salary range, $86.74/hour, and authorizes administrative processing to maintain continuity of operations.

ALTERNATIVES
1) Take no action. This would result in no appointed Chief Probation Officer after October 17, 2025, as the incumbent Deputy Chief Probation Officer's acting status ends upon the current CPO’s separation.
