DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

Each year Arts and Culture El Dorado presents two recognition programs for high school students: the Young Artist Awards, and Poetry Out Loud.

The Young Artist Awards recognize outstanding potential in four arts disciplines, and each award honors the memory of four bright lights in our community who were great supporters of the arts, and whose lives represent the talent, thoughtfulness, generosity, and commitment that make El Dorado County such a special place to live: the Joey Cattone Award for Visual Art; the Richard H. Bush Award for Music; the Jane Van Camp Award for Nature-Inspired Art; and the Lanny Langston Award for Theater.

Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation competition presented countywide by Arts and Culture El Dorado. The program encourages the study and appreciation of great poetry. Students engaged in the program not only learn about their literary heritage but also build self-confidence through mastering public speaking skills. The program begins at the high schools and participants advance to the state and ultimately the national competitions. This year four high schools were represented for the five awards: Union Mine, Ponderosa, Oak Ridge, and El Dorado.
