Body

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND

Growlersburg Chapter 86 of E Clampus Vitus has requested permission to install a historical plaque near the Spanish Dry Diggins Cemetery. The plaque is intended to commemorate the area's early mining history and highlight its significance during the California Gold Rush.

The proposed plaque text describes the arrival of Mexican prospectors led by General Andrés Pico in 1848, the rich gold discoveries along the Sliger quartz vein, the development of the settlement known as Spanish Dry Diggins, and the businesses that supported miners in the region. It also acknowledges the enduring legacy of the pioneers whose stories are interwoven with the earliest days of El Dorado County history.

The plaque is anticipated to be carved in a granite slab and set in cement.  Dimensions are dependent on the length needed for the verbiage. The plaque will be placed adjacent to the cemetery grounds, in a location appropriate for public viewing while preserving the site's integrity.  All costs associated with fabrication, installation, and long-term upkeep will be borne by Growlersburg Chapter 86.

ALTERNATIVES

The Board may deny the installation of the plaque.
