Background
In April 2013, the California State Library invited public libraries to "Pitch an Idea" for a new project that could qualify for federal Library and Services Act funding.  The Library's Learning2Go project is based on our experience in providing early literacy educational programs with funding from First 5 El Dorado, and on research such as a recent Pew Research Institute report that found that libraries provide a cost-effective and efficient role in providing early education.

Reason for Recommendation
The purpose of the Learning2Go grant is to provide resources, opportunities and support for young children and their parents and adult caregivers to engage together in early learning activities, particularly emphasizing the role play.  The grant will fund three basic areas of focus:
1)  Bookmobile/Playmobile.  Our current bookmobile will receive a colorful vinyl wrap  and will be stocked with hands-on manipulatives for many play and learning activities including art, science, and math.  The bookmobile/playmobile will be taken to community events, apartment complexes, preschools and child care sites.
2)  Staff will create Early Learning Kits that will allow childcare providers, preschool teachers and parents to have access to, and training on, using developmentally appropriate materials and resources.
3)   Working closely with the California State Library, we will create online videos, templates, and training materials for libraries throughout the state.

Action(s) to be taken following Board approval
Board Clerk to return Financial Claim and Certification Form to Library for submission to State Library.
Library staff to implement grant activities.
