Title: Library Department recommending the Board consider the following: 1) Accept funding totaling $14,700 from the California State Library for the purchase of equipment and supplies to establish a community garden and to develop Makerspace kits for students and teens; 2) Authorize the Chair to sign the Financial Claims and Grant Award Certifications requesting grant funding; and 3) Authorize the Chair to sign a budget transfer increasing revenues and appropriations by $14,700 as a result of the acceptance of this funding. Background
In 2013/14, the El Dorado County Library was invited to be part of a grant-funded intensive staff training program intended to develop leadership skills and innovative thinking among library staff at all levels of responsibility. The California State Library sponsors the program with federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant funding. Eleven El Dorado County Library staff were joined by twelve Placer County Library staff in participating in 11 half-day workshops that covered subjects from conflict management to making public presentations. Grant writing was emphasized, with a special opportunity to develop and compete for LSTA grant funding set aside for participants in the program.

Reason for Recommendation
Two grants were developed, reviewed, and “pitched” to the State Library by two teams of El Dorado County Library staff and the grant applications were approved for funding on August 4, 2014.

“Growing Teens: Community Garden” provides $6,500 in LSTA funding to involve teens and local volunteers in planting a small raised bed vegetable garden in an area next to the Placerville Library.
