Title: Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Division, recommending the Board consider the following: 1) Approve and authorize the Chair to sign documents required by the California Department of Public Health, Tuberculosis Control Branch, that will allow the County to receive reimbursement in the amount of $5,287 for core tuberculosis control and prevention activities to be performed during the period July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015, and contingent upon approval by County Counsel and Risk Management; 2) Approve and authorize the Chair to sign any revised Real-Time Allotments, if issued, and contingent upon approval by County Counsel and Risk Management; and 3) Authorize the Director of the Health and Human Services Agency to administer the Real-Time Allotment and execute invoices submitted for reimbursement and required fiscal and programmatic reports. FUNDING: California Department of Public Health, Tuberculosis Control Branch and Federal Funds.

Background
Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by mycobacteria that primarily causes infection of the lungs, but can also cause disease in other parts of the body such as the brain, kidneys, or spine. Pulmonary TB is spread from person to person through airborne droplets of mycobacterium that are inhaled by a susceptible individual. All suspected and confirmed cases of TB must be reported by the medical community to their local Public Health agency to ensure proper investigation of the initially diagnosed individual (index case) and all associated contacts.
