RECOMMENDED ACTION:  Approve.

Body

Fiscal Impact/Change to Net County Cost:  There is no fiscal impact.

Background:

In accordance with Section 2279 of the California Food and Agricultural Code, the department is submitting the 2006 El Dorado & Alpine Counties Crop Report.

The El Dorado County gross crop value for 2006 was $58.8 million; this is an overall 37.0% increase from the 2005 values.  This rise in values was caused by multiple factors including a 75.0% increase in timber, due to fire salvage, and a 25.8% increase in fruit and nut sales resulting from more accurate data collection.  Better statistical reporting from local beekeepers also led to a substantial 308.9% increase in apiary values.

The 2006 wine grape crop yielded a higher tonnage per acre.  This resulted in a 25.2% increase in production over the previous year.  Total wine grape tonnage sold outside of El Dorado County increased 97.7% from 859 tons in 2005 to 1698 tons in 2006.

The monetary values in this report are F.O.B. (Freight On Board) and do not reflect net returns or profits realized by the growers.  It is estimated that the impact of agriculture on El Dorado County’s economy totaled approximately $502 million in 2006.  The wine industry’s economic impact was estimated at $220 million, combined with Apple Hill’s additional $95 million, resulted in an overall $315 million dollar boost to the El Dorado County economy.

The Alpine County gross crop value for 2006 was $4.9 million; this is an overall 10.3% increase from the 2005 value.

Action to be taken following Board approval:
