Body

DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION:

Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) recommends that the Board accept a restricted donation of $5,400 from Iva Heuser, a long-time dedicated volunteer at the Senior Center, for the designated purpose of purchasing and installing eight (8) new custom-made bookcases in the library located within the Placerville Senior Center.

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:

The Placerville Senior Center, located at 937 Spring Street, provides various services to the Seniors of the County including a lending library consisting of miscellaneous books, magazines, puzzles, and games.  The existing six (6) bookcases are old and mismatched, and many of the bookcase shelves are cracked or missing.  The existing shelving will not support the weight of many books. Boxes are used to store the books that do not fit onto the existing functioning bookcase shelves, making it difficult to view the selection.

Iva Heuser is a long-time volunteer at the Placerville Senior Center, is the lead volunteer in charge of the library and wishes to donate the new custom-made bookcases.  The books, magazines, and puzzles maintained in the Senior Center lending library are free for use by the seniors who utilize the Placerville Senior Center.  All items contained in the library are donated and must be deemed in good condition prior to being placed in the library.  Several volunteers maintain the library by labeling, organizing, and stocking the items.

Many seniors utilize the Placerville Senior Center and the library for social and recreational purposes.  As the senior population increases in the County, so does the need to enhance the Placerville Senior Center library for those who visit and use the resources available at the Senior Center.  The new bookcases will allow more room for the hundreds of books, magazines, puzzles, and games.  These custom-made bookcases will replace the worn-out bookcases, provide room for additional items as they are donated, and help beautify the area in which seniors read and visit.

ALTERNATIVES:

Disapproval of the donation would result in the loss of the restricted donation and seniors who visit the Placerville Senior Center will have to continue to look through boxes for reading material instead of more easily accessing the materials in the proposed bookcases.

OTHER DEPARTMENT / AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

None.

CAO RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the Board approve this item.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

There is no Net County Cost associated with this Agenda Item.  Delivery and installation charges are included in the cost of building the custom-made bookcases.
