Public Health Department recommending the Board approve, in concept, the submission of an application to California Endowment to receive an award in the amount of $30,000 for a one-year period to fund the Planning for Environmental and Systems Change Program designed to allow local health departments the opportunity to create a plan to reduce disparities in obesity and diabetes through a cross-sectoral, environmental and systems change approach.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve.

Fiscal Impact/Change to Net County Cost: If awarded, this grant will provide $30,000 in funding for the Department's Planning for Environmental and Systems Change program. There is no net County cost.
Background: The Department has an opportunity to submit an application to the California Endowment to help fund the aforementioned program, designed to allow local health departments the opportunity to create a plan to reduce disparities in obesity and diabetes through a cross-sectoral, environmental and systems change approach.
Reason for Recommendation: This one-year grant will support preparation of a detailed plan for:
1. Increased internal organization capacity and public health system improvements, including leadership development, staff training, creative financing, and the use of technology to foster collaboration and advocacy.
2. Developing and sustaining collaborative relationships across sectors to jointly promote improved nutrition and physical activity environments.
3. Participation in local and state forums and training programs with community leaders, planners, school officials, businesses, and policymakers to advocate for improved nutrition and physical activity environments.
Action to be taken following Board approval: Department to submit Application for Grant; Department to return to Board to execute any resulting Agreement and/or other documentation to administer the Program for the duration of the Grant.
