Fiscal Impact/Change to Net County Cost: None.  The Sheriff's FY07/08 budget reflects this revenue source.

Background: Each year, the County receives funds from the State of California Department of Boating & Waterways to patrol the County's rivers and lakes.  The money received by the Sheriff pays for extra-help Deputy Sheriffs who patrol rivers and lakes in the unincorporated areas from May through September; regular full-time Deputies who provide that service on a year-round basis; all of the boats, equipment and supplies necessary to run this program.

Reason for Recommendation: The County has participated in this very successful program for over 20 years.  A condition of participation in this program is that the County must use the boat property taxes collected in El Dorado County to partially fund the program.  Should your Board elect not to sign this contract, the boat property taxes could be used for any purpose you designated, but the County would still be obligated to enforce Federal and State laws and local ordinances on the County's rivers and lakes.

Action to be taken following Board approval:  The Chair will sign the contract and the Sheriff will submit it to the State Department of Boating & Waterways.
