Fiscal Impact/Change to Net County Cost: There is no fiscal impact associated with the application request or resolution. If successful, the grant application could provide $17,322 in funding to the Department for West Nile Virus surveillance.

Background: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued an executive order on August 13, 2007 to provide up to $10.0 million to local governments for emergency surveillance and control efforts to mitigate the threat of West Nile Virus (WNV) transmission. Emergency award funding will be based on both the current risk of WNV transmission and on the immediate resource needs of the applying agency. The funding is competitively awarded on a first come, first serve basis.

Reason for Recommendation: The Governor's executive order of August 13, 2007 is providing emergency funding to provide mosquito control and surveillance efforts to mitigate the threat of West Nile virus. County staff will use this funding to re-stock depleted mosquito control supplies and to continue our efforts in monitoring and treating mosquito breeding sources. The money will fund one extra-help Vector Control Technician through the end of the 2007 calendar season.
