Reason for Recommendation:

On June 5, 2007 agenda item #7 (07-730), the Board approved the District Attorney's request to apply for the Workers Compensation Fraud Grant.   Subsequently, the California Department of Insurance has approved $205,000 for FY 07/08.   The District Attorney's office originally budgeted $175,000.

Efforts to combat workers compensation fraud have been expanded considerably since January 2007.  As a result the Department of Insurance has expanded the grant from the FY 06/07 level of  $49,944 to $205,000 for FY 07/08.

On August 14, 2007 agenda item #10 (07-415), the Board approved the District Attorney's request to apply for the Auto Insurance Fraud Program.  This was an increase of $120,000 to the FY 07/08 original budget.  The additional funding allows the county to provide enhanced investigation and prosecution of automobile insurance fraud.

Due to the stability of the Auto Insurance Fraud Program the District Attorney's office is able to provide sound assessments and allocate funds as necessary.  Should grant funding be reduced in the future the District Attorney's office would make provision to either modify or continue the program within available funding.

The District Attorney's office requests the approval of the Personnel Resolution adding one additional District Attorney Investigator to our office.  This individual will be responsible for assisting in the further progression of the Auto Insurance Fraud Program.  The cost of the position for 6 months is $56,000.  The funding will be provided by the Auto Insurance Fraud Grant.
