Background: Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring radioactive gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the United States. One in fifteen homes across the United States has an elevated level of radon and the only way to determine if a home has elevated levels is to perform a simple and inexpensive test.
A recent California Department of Public Health survey in South Lake Tahoe showed that radon is present at elevated levels in about 51% of the sample homes tested.
Reason for Recommendation: The Environmental Management Department will be participating in various radon awareness activities to educate the public about the dangers of radon and what can be done to minimize the health risk from exposure to elevated levels of indoor radon.
Action to be taken following Board approval: Forward Resolution to Department.
