Fiscal Impact/Change to Net County Cost: None. The State of California, Department of Boating and Waterways is fully funding these purchases and there is no County match required.
Background: The State of California, Department of Boating and Waterways, provides the Sheriff with an annual grant for an intervention program on the County's lakes and waterways. As an extension of that program, the State also offers equipment grants for items above-and-beyond the cost of the day-to-day boating operation.
Reason for Recommendation: The Sheriff has requested, and the Department of Boating and Waterways has agreed to fund, the purchase of a portable drop-down sonar unit with carrying case and a dedicated lap-top computer to allow for the immediate, portable viewing of radar images. This equipment will provide a much clearer picture of lake bottoms which make it much easier to locate lost objects such as vehicles, boats or drowning victims. This equipment is portable which will allow for travel to all of the county's waterways as well as to other counties to assist with mutual aid requests.
