DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION:
Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) recommending the Board authorize the Chair to sign a letter to the El Dorado Community Foundation to support a grant funding award to South County Large Animal Rescue (SCLAR) for the purchase of additional provisions and materials required for transporting, handling and housing of livestock.
DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
The El Dorado Community Foundation considers several types of competitive grant requests, one being the Endow El Dorado Grant. The Endow El Dorado 2017 Grant is open to all nonprofits in El Dorado County and is designed to inspire new ideas with the possibility of responding to previously unmet needs of local residents.
The County Office of Emergency Services through County of El Dorado Animal Services has collaborated with SCLAR for over 10 years to promote and conduct safe evacuations of large animals and livestock. The County’s Animal Services, in particular, partners with SCLAR to provide education and trainings, awareness campaigns, and to promote efforts to increase coverage in El Dorado County during fire season.
Recently, County of El Dorado has experienced severe wildland fires threatening populations which contain many large and livestock animals. The importance of awareness and preparedness for disaster response is crucial to the survival and wellbeing of livestock. SCLAR is experiencing a severe shortage of provisions and materials for transporting, handling and housing of livestock.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could decide not to support the grant funding award to SCLAR.
