Body

DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION:

Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) recommends the Board of Supervisors accept this grant funding to support and enhance activities and programs at the Placerville Senior Center that are not otherwise funded or cannot be funded under the Older American’s Act Program.

DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:

Based on the responses seniors made to a survey conducted at the Placerville Senior Center in 2015, a grant was sought to fill needs, relative to the Senior Center, identified in the survey.  The survey showed that there is an increase of “younger and new” seniors in the community and that they are looking beyond the traditional senior-focused activities such as board and card games.  Seniors want to attend classes that focus on health and fitness such as yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba, weight lifting, and hiking.  They also expressed a desire for the opportunity to expand their knowledge by attending workshops and presentations that focus on technology, health, history, photography, and literature.

The grant will provide approximately 3,000 seniors with the activities described above and a weekly “Movie Day” that is gaining popularity among seniors at the Placerville Senior Center.

Under the grant, fees for professional speakers/presentations will be paid; a public address system will be purchased for the dining room; movie supplies (popcorn, oil, bags for the popcorn, and movies) will be purchased/rented; refreshments will be chosen; and items bought for senior activity enhancements such as a radio with speaker system, yoga mats, fitness equipment, wall art, and storage containers.

These items and activities will provide seniors at the Placerville Senior Center the opportunity to gather knowledge, socialize, and increase wellness to mind, body, and soul.

ALTERNATIVES:

Disapproval of this grant means that activities such as Movie Day and various workshops/presentations would not be made available to approximately 3,000 individual seniors at the Placerville Senior Center.

OTHER DEPARTMENT / AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
