Health and Human Services Agency recommending the Board of Supervisors authorize the Chair to sign a Proclamation to recognize April 2 - 8, 2017 as Safety Seat Checkup Week.
DISCUSSION / BACKGROUND:
Automobile collisions are the number one preventable cause of death and permanent injury for children and young adults in California. Annually, in California, more than 90 child passengers under the age of 15 are killed and more than 10,000 are injured in automobile collisions. Most children need to ride in a booster seat until age 10 to 12. Using a booster seat along with a seat belt prevents an estimated 45% of crash injuries. It also is estimated that nearly 90% of child safety seats are used incorrectly.
California Vehicle Code requires all occupants in a vehicle to be properly restrained and child occupants under the age of eight must be properly restrained in either a safety seat or booster seat, in the back seat of a vehicle. Drivers who fail to ensure passengers are properly restrained may be ticketed and points will be added to their driving record.
April 2 - 8, 2017 is Safety Seat Checkup Week. The County of El Dorado Board of Supervisors joins SafetyBeltSafe U.S.A. in supporting and promoting safety seatbelts for all passengers.
